Physical Path Credentials

I have a question about Physical Path Credentials. Spent lots of time searching the posts but didn't find the answer.

When Windows authentication is applied to a web site, Application user (pass-through authentication) is recommended for Physical Path Credentials under advanced settings panel for the web site. What does Application user (pass-through authentication) mean exactly? Many posts say Application user means the user using the application(client user who logon to the application). If this is the case, it's impossible to grant all the users access to the web application physical path. Or the "physical path" in "Physical path credentials" means other path than the web application physical path?

I tested my application by asking a user who does not have access to the application physical path to logon the application, there's no problem. Can any one elaborate this? Thanks.

James
